Back-to-School for Parents: Quick Checklist

Back-to-school is exciting—also a busy time. Use this checklist to help your family start the year safer and more prepared.

1) Prep for the Morning Rush (and the Road)

• Check tires, brakes, lights, and windshield wipers

• Make sure seat belts work properly for everyone

• Review safe driving rules (no distractions, follow the speed limit, keep distance)

• If you have a new driver, practice common routes (drop-off, parking lots, pickup spots)

Parent tip: Plan for backups—charger cords, a place for school forms, and an “emergency contact” list in the car.

2) Car Seats & Booster Seats (If Applicable)

• Confirm the seat/booster is installed correctly

• Re-check height/weight guidelines if your child recently had a growth spurt

• Make sure the correct seat is used every trip (especially during carpools)

3) Home Safety Before School Starts

• Test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors

• Check that cleaning supplies/medications are stored securely

• Review kitchen/stove safety and keep matches/lighters out of reach

• If storms are common in your area, check for any quick home prep needs (gutter drainage, roof/attic leaks)

4) Don’t Forget the Insurance Check

Before the school year ramps up, it’s a great time to review your coverage—especially if:

• Your teen driver is added or nearing driving age

• You moved, upgraded your vehicle, or changed household details
